CT Preps

For CT scans that require Readi-CAT oral contrast
Most scans of the abdomen and pelvis require Readi-CAT oral contrast. Readi-CAT should be picked up at the imaging center at least one day before your exam. The following are instructions for drinking Readi-CAT:

IF YOUR APPOINTMENT IS SCHEDULED BEFORE 3PM, PLEASE FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Evening before the exam: Drink one entire bottle of Readi-CAT within a 1 hour period. If necessary, sip slowly.
  • Day of your CT Scan: You should have only clear liquids during the 4 hours prior to the scheduled time of your exam. No solid foods. No milk products. 1/2 hour prior to your appointment, drink half of the second bottle of Readi-CAT. Sip slowly, if necessary. Bring the remaining half bottle with you to the office. The CT Scan technologist will advise you when to finish drinking the remaining Readi-CAT.

IF YOUR APPOINTMENT IS SCHEDULED AFTER 3PM, PLEASE FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Morning of your exam: Drink one entire bottle of Readi-CAT between 7 and 9 am, finishing the entire drink in 1 hour. Sip slowly, if necessary.
  • Day of your CT Scan: You should have only clear liquids during the 4 hours prior to the scheduled time of your exam. No solid foods. No milk products. 1/2 hour prior to your appointment, drink half of the second bottle of Readi-CAT. Sip slowly, if necessary. Bring the remaining half bottle with you to the office. The CT Scan technologist will advise you when to finish drinking the remaining Readi-CAT.

For CT Scans requiring intravenous contrast injections
Please maintain a clear liquid diet for 4 hours prior to the start of your CT scan. Blood work is required for all patients who are diabetic or have a single kidney. The blood work should be recent (no older than two months) and must include BUN and creatinine levels.

Diabetic patients on Metmorfin medication must stop taking this drug 1 day prior to the exam. Following the CT scan, please contact your physician prior to restarting the medication. Your physician may request that blood work be redrawn.

Asthmatic patients must be premedicated with medrol prior to the CT scan. Your physician must prescribe the medication and instruct you on its proper use.

Head/Brain CT Scan
No prep is required for this exam. If ordered with contrast, please refer to the contrast injection instructions outlined above.

Sinus CT Scan
No prep required for this exam.

Abdominal CT Scan
Readi-CAT oral contrast is required for all abdominal CT scans. See instructions outlined above.

For scan exams requiring intravenous injections - see instructions outlined above.

Kidney stone CT scans require no oral Readi-CAT or IV contrast.

Pelvic CT Scan
Readi-CAT oral contrast is required for all pelvic CT scans. See instructions outlined above.

CT Scan of Extremities (including ankles, wrists, and hips)
No prep is required for this exam.

Spine CT Scan
No prep required for this exam. If you have x-rays from an outside facility, please be sure to bring them for your exam.

Thorax (Chest) CT Scan
No prep required for this exam. If you have x-rays from an outside facility, please be sure to bring them for your exam.

Dental CT Scans
If you are given a dental appliance to wear for your exam, please be sure to bring it with you.
